Knowledge Spillovers in Competitive Search Equilibrium

چکیده
Do firms have the right incentives to innovate in the presence of spillovers? This paper proposes an explicit channel of spillovers through labor flows within a framework of competitive search. Firms can choose to innovate or to imitate by hiring a worker from a firm that has already innovated. We show that with long-term wage contracts information spillovers caused by worker turnover are effi ciently internalized. If innovating firms cannot commit to long-term wage contracts, there is too little innovation and too much imitation. A combination of a subsidy to innovation and a fee to imitation can restore effi ciency. A stand-alone subsidy of innovating firms will also improve effi cency. A fee on imitation has ambigous welfare effects, although it reduces imitation it also reduces innovation. Restrictions on labor mobility reduces welfare.

Adjustment Costs and Long Run Spatial Agglomerations1
We introduce knowledge spillovers as an externality in the production function of competitive firms operating in a finite spatial domain under adjustment costs. Spillovers are spatial as productive knowledge flows more easily among firms located nearby. When knowledge spillovers are not internalized by firms spatial agglomerations may emerge endogenously in a competitive equilibrium, however, t...
متن کاملTheoretical Perspectives on Localised Knowledge Spillovers and Agglomeration
There is substantial empirical evidence that innovation is geographically concentrated. Unlike what is generally assumed, however, it is not clear that localised knowledge spillovers provide a theoretically valid explanation for this. Studying spillovers of cost-reducing technology between Cournot oligopolists we show that 1) localised knowledge spillovers of any level do encourage agglomeratio...
متن کاملAre internal knowledge transfer strategies double-edged swords?
Purpose – After identifying two kinds of internal knowledge transfer strategies, the purpose of this paper is to examine their effectiveness and whether they induce knowledge spillovers among firms. Design/methodology/approach – This study collected data in China and 219 questionnaires were achieved. Then, structure equation model by LISREL was used for hypotheses testing. Findings – The empiri...
متن کاملSelf-reinforcing market dominance
Are initial competitive advantages self-reinforcing, so that markets exhibit an endogenous tendency to be dominated by only a few firms? Although this question is of great economic importance, no systematic empirical study has yet addressed it. Therefore, we examine experimentally whether firms with an initial cost advantage are more likely to invest in cost reductions than firms with higher in...

We study a stochastic dynamic game of process innovation in which firms can initiate and terminate R&D efforts and production at different times. We discern the impact of knowledge spillovers on the investments in existing markets, as well as on the likely structure of newly forming markets, for all possible asymmetries between firms. While an increase in spillovers may improve the likelihood o...
